The Lesser Known More Important Benefits of Gutter Cleaning

Even though cleaning your home's gutters is unpleasant, it is very important not to neglect the task. There are many benefits to keeping them clean. Many of these reasons are well known and others are often overlooked.

The Well Known Benefits of Clean Gutters

Overflowing gutter systems can be unsightly. The weight of the damp leaves and debris causes the lightweight gutter systems to sag and pull away from the home. During a rain storm the water that collects in the gutters will spill out over the edges due to the clogged pathways that were intended to allow the water to be diverted to the down spouts and away from the house. Many people believe that these are the only reasons behind gutter cleaning.

The Less Known Reasons to Keep Gutters Clean

The commonly overlooked reasons for gutter cleaning are often the most important reasons. Overflowing gutters can cause problems with the foundation of your home. Water that spills directly off the edges of your roof and onto the ground next to your home starts a dangerous process of erosion. The soil that surrounds the foundation of your home can be washed away. The displaced soil causes the walls of the foundation to weaken. If the problem is not fixed and there has been too much soil displaced, the walls of the foundation can collapse under the weight of the home.

Some homes may not have a risk for the ground eroding away from the foundation, but that does not mean that they do not have risks connected to water falling close to the house itself. Instead, these homes may see problems with erosion in the form of cracks and holes in the foundation. These cracks are started from very small cracks and crevices that already exist in the porous cement used to form the house's foundation. Water begins to work its way into and back out of the small cracks, taking with it small particles of the material. Over time, the removal of these tiny particles adds up and causes the small cracks to grow into big cracks. The larger cracks in the foundation lead to water and moisture in the basement. While that water may not be a big concern if you do not store anything in the basement, it can cause a perfect growing environment for mold and mildew. The presence of mold and mildew can be very hazardous to the inhabitants of the home. Some forms of mildew can cause very serious illnesses and in some cases can lead to death.

Healthy Gutters and a Healthy Family

Gutter Cleaning is not typically thought of as an investment into the well being of the home environment. It does however avoid situations that can lead to unhealthy and dangerous conditions within a home. For the amount of time and effort, cleaning your gutters is quite a task. All of the efforts to complete the task pay off in the end giving the homeowner peace of mind and a great looking home. The homeowners who do not have the time to spare for cleaning the gutters or are not physically able to complete the task are in luck. There are professional services readily available for the upkeep of your gutter systems all over the United States.
