Gutter Repair Is Simple And Easy
Gutters are normally left un-noticed until it rains or they stop up. Then, most times it seems as if it is too late to fix minor problems that have now gone into major ones. With these simple steps homeowners now can fix their gutter with ease!
By definition, a gutter is a low lying channel or trough installed along the eaves of a house to catch and channel away rainwater and melting snow. A downspout is the canal that directs rainwater from the roof gutter system down to a ground run-off area or directly into a storm sewer system. To work efficiently, water needs an unobstructed and resistance-free path down into the gutters and continuing through to the home’s downspouts. Gutters need to be leak proof and free of debris (such as pine needles and leaves). Most gutter systems today are made of many materials including copper, vinyl, galvanized steel (not recommended), aluminum, fiberglass, or wood.
Some minor problems may occur with gutters such as clogging. However, those minor problems need to be addressed immediately so as to not result in bigger ones. In addition, gutters can sag, which can also cause leaking gutters and downspouts.
If the homeowners need to spot a problem, minor tests can be performed. If water stays in the gutter, drains slowly or overflows then the homeowner may need to take precautionary measures such as installing screens. If the water tends to run behind the gutter down siding the homeowner may need to install a drip edge.
Fixing a problem with the gutter can be very simple if it’s immediate. Most replacement parts for gutter systems are generally found in hardware stores and home centers. The tools that the homeowner may need are quite minor such as a screwdriver, ladder, drill, rubber gloves, safety glasses, a garden hose, hammer or other minor tools.
A good tip to always remember is to wear rubber gloves when removing debris from gutters and ensure that sharp objects don’t puncture the gloves. Safety glasses are also very essential.
Cleaning a gutter is a simple process consisting of two easy steps. The first step in cleaning out the gutter is to remove all the debris from the edge of the roof and in the leaf guards. The second step is to use a garden hose to help wash off dirt and grit from the gutter which will help bring the debris toward the downspout.
Furthermore, protecting the gutter can occur through installing a gutter screen. This can be done by laying the gutter screen along the roof edge where it will be installed and fastening all the pieces together to make a continuous gutter screen along the length of the gutter. If there is any excess, the homeowner can cut if off from the end so that the gutter and screen fit the gutter. Moreover, it is essential to place the gutter screen in the gutter along with clipping or fastening it in place for a secure fit.
Finally, homeowners can now clean and install their gutters with very easy steps. Although gutter can take up from the homeowners’ time, solving a minor leak problem or clogging right from the beginning can help prevent major problems. |
